Workshop on Electrospinning of Chitosan

  • 2nd - 4th September, 2015
  • Münster, NRW, Germany

The COST MP1206 workshop will take part within the framework of the bi-annual International Conference of the European Chitin Society which this year will be concomitant with the tri-annual International Conference on Chitin and Chitosan, promoting the free exchange of knowledge and feedback among experts of different areas.

The "Electrospinning of Chitosan" workshop will be focused on the use of chitosanx as constituents of electrospun materials in four main application areas, namely drug delivery, tissue engineering, food packaging, and agriculture.

Chitosan is a very interesting biopolymer, it is one of the most abundant polysaccharides in nature and has been used as active ingredient in many applications. Due to its natural origin, often poor reproducibility and high variability in results, the use of chitosan has been mostly limited to lab-scale research. However, a full understanding of the polymer as a family of
molecules opens the window to reach market applications, and this is what ICCC 2015 will be all about.

The conference had so far only been taking place in Asia, Australia and the USA and has never been taking place in EU up to now. The participant will be Prof. Tamer Uyar (Vice chair of MP1206). He is a speaker listed in the official programme of the conference. He will disseminate the Action’s activities in his presentation, and collect information to be further disseminated amongst the Action’s members.

Title of the oral contribution : Electrospinning of Non-Polymeric Systems: Green and Polymer-free Electrospun Nanofibers from Cyclodextrins and Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes.
Presenter: Prof. Tamer Uyar

MP1206 Workshop on  "Electrospinning for advanced nanocomposite production"
Part of th International Conference on Advanced Nanomaterials

  • July 4th 2014
  • Aveiro, Portugal

Scope of the Workshop: Nanocomposites are high performance materials that exhibit unusual property combinations and unique design possibilities. The uses of nanocomposites for emerging technologies represents one of the most active areas of research and development throughout the fields of chemistry, physics, life sciences, and related technologies and are thought of as the materials of the 21st century. The electrospinning method for production of nanofibers has become one of the most promising techniques for producing nanostructured materials with very wide range of applications. Recent advances towards the production of composite nanofibers or core shell nanofibers with multifunctional properties were reported. However, the introduction of nanoparticles in the electrospinning feed increases the already high complexity of the process because of the additional components and phases. It gives rise however to a large panel of possible and interesting structures.

The workshop is linked to the ANM20145th International Conference on Advanced Nanomaterials. ANM2014 – 5th International Conference on Advanced Nanomaterials (http://anm2014.com) will be held at 2-4 July at the same place. COST Participants can attend both the conference and the workshop. The organization of the conference will take the care to appoint for the 4th July morning a technical session that will not overlap the interest of the participants with the COST workshop. This could be a good opportunity to spread the electrospinning technique among materials engineering scientists. Regarding the COST workshop organization, this is a good opportunity to take advantage of the conference rooms renting, coffee breaks and lunches.

This workshop is predominantly addressing the scientific goals of WG1 (electrospun materials) by gathering all the experts on advanced electrospun materials composed of nanocomposites. The advanced applications of such materials are the domain of WG4 (technical applications of electrospun materials).

2014 MRS Spring Meeting & Exhibit

  • April 21-25, 2014
  • San Francisco, California

This symposium explores existing and emerging synergies between advanced experimental measurements and state-of-the-art modeling and simulations toward predictive materials design and fundamental understanding of structure-property relations. Truly predictive material science results from hierarchical feedback loops between in-situ, combinatorial measurements, and modeling of structure-property relationships. Topics of interest to this symposium include, but are not limited to, the following combinations of modeling and measurement: materials screening by combinatorial measurements to inform models (or vice versa); in-situ measurements that define foundations for modeling; atomic and electronic structure measurements to inform models; and “virtual experiments” designed to complement experimental measurements.

This is the annual MC group meeting and the first general WG group meeting where all WG group members will meet and inform in short presentations about their research fields and research interests. This gathering will be a very important event so that all participating MP 1206 members get to know each other better and an efficient networking can start. It is organized as a satellite event of the international conference focused on the science of electrospinning Title: “Electrospinning Principles, Practice and Possibilities“. The MP1206 participants have the opportunity to attend this conference, which will take place on the following days at December 5th and December 6th.

COST MP1206 Training School on board of the Polymar conference

  • Nov 3rd- Nov 7th 2013, 2013
  • Barcelona, ES

Scope and Concept of the workshop:
The training school of MP1206 will be organized in cooperation with the Polymar Conference 2013. The POLYMAR 2013 conference is, to the best of our knowledge, the first conference in Polymers ever to be made on a boat across the Mediterranean Sea with special focus on Early Stage Researchers (ESR) with no nationality restriction. The conference intends to provide a low cost all included forum for the polymer scientific community to meet up, show their latest work and activities and network with their peers. All attendees are expected to provide short talks, highlighting their main research results, interests and current activities of their groups.

Although the conference is intended primarily for young polymer scientists including young group leaders, permanent researchers starting their own groups, young academics being currently part of a group, post-docs and PhD and Master students, in fact, anyone working with polymers is welcome to join the conference. To provide an equal opportunity forum, there is no invited or keynote talks, everyone is at the same level and everyone has a say. A round table is programed one of the days to discuss the future of the field.

This special setting of the Polymar conference makes it ideal to integrate a COST MP1206 training school. It is intended to train the participating ESR actively and passively in training sessions on electrospinning and nanofibre science and technology but also to give them access to the conference lectures of the Polymar. Since nobody can leave the Polymar for the 5 days, such a setting will make networking and contact between ESR and advanced senior researchers easy and very rewarding. For more details see:

Title: Safe and efficient formulations for Electrospinning – SAEFE

Scope and Concept of the SAEFE workshop:
Success in electrospinning of nanofibres depends on many parameters. Very important for the safety and efficiency of the electrospinning process itself as well as for the shape and dimensions of the nanofibres is the formulation of the solutions used for electrospinning. Therefore, the scope of the SAEFE workshop is to teach fundamentals of the formulations for electrospinning for different materials systems and different materials demands. Organic solutions as well as aqueous solution will be discussed along with the resulting nanofibres nonwoven properties. Participants of the SAEFE Workshop should gain a solid understanding of general rules for setting up safe and efficient formulations, their characterization, and electrospinning of the formulations. The concept of the SAEFE workshop is to teach the fundaments of formulations for electrospinning and practical experiments on preparation, characterization, and electrospinning of organic as well as aqueous formulations.
