Advanced Functional Materials, March, 2015

Abstract:
Ultralight polymer sponges are prepared by freeze-drying of dispersions of short electrospun fi bers. In contrast to many other highly porous materials, these sponges show extremely low densities (<3 mg cm −3 ) in combination with low specifi c surface areas. The resulting hierarchical pore structure of the sponges gives basis for soft and reversibly compressible materials and to hydrophobic behavior in combination with excellent uptake for hydrophobic liquids. Owing to their large porosity, cell culturing is successful after hydrophilic modifi cation of the sponges.

MP1206 Workshop on Electrospinning for High Performance Sensing

01-03-2014

  • April 29th-30th 2014
  • Roma, ITALY

The First International Workshop on Electrospinning for High Performance Sensing (EHPS) is hosted by the Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research of the CNR (CNR-IIA) and will be held in Rome on the 29th-30th of April 2014 (Chair A. Macagnano) within the COST Action MP1206

For more details see the conference website:  www.electrospinsense.iia.cnr.it

Electrospinning is a versatile and not expensive technology, suitable for micro-nanostructured sensors, allowing an easy integration of long fibres (both organics and inorganics) with microcircuits in different configurations and on several substrates.
Sensitivity, detection limits, response time and selectivity of each nanofibrous sensor can be optimized by tuning the porosity of fibres and layers (through the orchestration of different parameters in  electrospinning), as well as by performing post-treatment procedures.
Some recent and encouraging results obtained in field of sensors, ranging from a very high sensitivity to extreme operating conditions, allowed the use of versatile and very slight substrates thus covering a multitude of requirements.
Despite of these amazing and industrially attractive properties for sensors manufacturing, electrospinning technology is still not wide spread among nanotechnologies for sensors.
The workshop focuses on exploring and debating several aspects of the electrospinning technology for designing and manufacturing high performing materials for sensors. The original contributions will be collected in a Springer edited book.

Organiser: Antonella Macagnano
